Puff (Balbiani ring) is a Swelling of Polytene Chromosome
Puff (Balbiani ring) is swelling that is seen in certain areas of the giant (polytene) chromosomes found in the salivary glands and other tissues of certain dipterous insects at certain times. Puff is consisting of many strands of de-condensed DNA and its associated messenger RNA. Puffs originate in different regions of the chromosome in a certain sequence and their occurrence can be correlated with specific developmental events. Others occur only in certain tissues. The puffs are sites of active transcription of probably just a single gene, though present as numerous copies. This idea is reinforced by the fact that such puffs occur at regular intervals, suggesting that gene switching is in operation.
